Crossing borders: Venturing into the European Research Area
Austria & Hungary, 30-31 October 2003

Crossing institutional borders and cultures has proved a major obstacle in the governance of research and innovation policies. One often sees a lack of coherence and coordination between research policy and innovation policy at national/regional and European levels. By organizing this workshop in Eisenstadt (Austria) and Sopron (Hungary), the Six Countries programme sought to openly debate this issue and propose possible ways forward. Among the topics addressed during the workshop were: the need to establish workable collaborative arrangements at national and supranational levels, the positive but critical challenges posed by newcomers to the European Research Area, and continued lack of clarity regarding some objectives and targets of the Lisbon/Barcelona ERA action plans.
